
Breed descriptions - As a whole the breeds are only differentiated by coat. The cavy underneath is the same.
American- the generic short smooth coated pig
Coronet- a long coated crested but the standard does not require the white gene in the star.
Crested- star gene causes a rosette on the forehead of the cavy. In the USA this must be combined with a modified white spotting gene causing the rosette to be whiteSilkie_ a long coated American ( the hair grows in a smooth line away from the head
Teddy_ a modified hair gene causing the coat to be slightly longer and kinky ( rather like and afro)Abyssinian_ Carries the rough coat gene causing the rosettes to form on the body of the cavy. The aby must have at least 8 ( preferably 10) rosettes in a specified pattern.
Peruvian- a long coated Abyssinian, causing the coat to fall forward over the face and when grown out looks like a dust mop and the face is hidden under the fall of hair
Texel- a long coated teddy ( in effect, but the curl is caused by the English rex gene rather than the American teddy gene. both have the same coat, but a different mutation caused them and if you breed one to the other you get Americans )Coats have ringlets, like doll wigs
