Breed descriptions -  As a whole the breeds are only differentiated by coat.  The cavy underneath is the same.

American Cavies

American- the generic short smooth coated pig

Coronets

Coronet- a long coated crested but the standard does not require the white gene in the star.

Crested Cavies

Crested- star gene causes a rosette on the forehead of the cavy.  In the USA this must be combined with a modified white spotting gene causing the rosette to be white

Silkies

Silkie_ a long coated American ( the hair grows in a smooth line away from the head

Teddies

Teddy_ a modified hair gene causing the coat to be slightly longer and kinky ( rather like and afro)

Abyssinian_ Carries the rough coat gene causing the rosettes to form on the body of the cavy.  The aby must have at least 8 ( preferably 10) rosettes in a specified pattern.

Peruvian- a long coated Abyssinian, causing the coat to fall forward over the face and when grown out looks like a dust mop and the face is hidden under the fall of hair

Texel- a long coated teddy ( in effect, but the curl is caused by the English rex gene rather than the American teddy gene.  both have the same coat, but a different mutation caused them and if you breed one to the other you get Americans )Coats have ringlets, like doll wigs
